Upgrading from an RTX 3080 Ti to an RTX 4070 Ti Super is usually not worth it on its own: the newer card is only about 10-20% faster in typical games, and the real gains are 4 GB more VRAM, DLSS Frame Generation and roughly 65 W lower power. It makes sense mainly if you can sell the 3080 Ti and swap for little net cost, or if 12 GB is already limiting you at 1440p or 4K; otherwise a bigger jump, such as an RTX 5070 Ti or higher, gives far more for the money.

The RTX 3080 Ti launched in May 2021 at $1,199 as the Ampere card just below the RTX 3090. The RTX 4070 Ti Super arrived in January 2024 at $799 as a mid-cycle Ada Lovelace refresh that moved the 4070 Ti onto a cut-down AD103 chip with 16 GB. Both are previous-generation cards in 2026, and the RTX 50 series now occupies their price brackets.

Length / width 285 mm, 2-slot 310 mm, 3-slot
Outputs 1x HDMI, 3x DisplayPort 1x HDMI 2.1, 3x DisplayPort 1.4a

On paper the newer card looks like a step back in several places: fewer CUDA cores, a narrower 256-bit bus and about 26% less memory bandwidth. Two things offset that. Ada’s boost clock is roughly 57% higher, and the L2 cache grows from 6 MB to 48 MB, which cuts how often the GPU has to go out to memory. The result is a modestly faster card that uses less power, not a dramatically faster one.

Real-World Gain: Smaller Than the Name Suggests

Major outlets did not publish many direct RTX 3080 Ti versus RTX 4070 Ti Super charts, but their data lines up through shared reference cards. Tom’s Hardware found the original RTX 4070 Ti about 12% faster than the RTX 3080 Ti at 1440p, and its RTX 4070 Ti Super review measured the Super about 7% ahead of the 4070 Ti at 1440p ultra. Gamers Nexus placed the RTX 4070 Super roughly level with the RTX 3080 Ti, with the 4070 Ti Super around 15-16% ahead of the 4070 Super at 1440p. TechSpot (Hardware Unboxed) saw an even smaller step between the 4070 Ti and the Ti Super.

Taken together, the RTX 4070 Ti Super is roughly 10-20% faster than the RTX 3080 Ti at 1440p, with a similar or slightly smaller gap at 4K, where the RTX 3080 Ti’s wider memory bus helps. At 1080p the difference often shrinks to single digits because the CPU becomes the limit. As an approximate illustration, a game running around 80 fps at 1440p on the RTX 3080 Ti would typically run somewhere around 88-96 fps on the RTX 4070 Ti Super; real results vary with settings, CPU, patch and driver.

Ray tracing

Ada’s RT cores and the larger cache give the RTX 4070 Ti Super a slightly bigger lead in ray-traced games than in raster, typically toward the upper end of that range and occasionally beyond it in heavy RT titles. It is not a new performance tier for path tracing, though; both cards need DLSS for comfortable path-traced frame rates at 1440p.

What You Actually Gain Beyond FPS

  • 16 GB instead of 12 GB: This is the most meaningful hardware upgrade. Several recent games exceed 12 GB at 1440p or 4K with maximum textures and ray tracing, causing stutter. The extra 4 GB buys several years of headroom.
  • DLSS Frame Generation: Available on RTX 40-series cards, not on the RTX 3080 Ti. In supported games it can raise displayed frame rates substantially, with a small latency cost, which suits high-refresh monitors.
  • DLSS 4 upscaling: The transformer-based upscaler works on both cards, so image quality from upscaling is not a reason to upgrade. Multi Frame Generation needs an RTX 50-series card, so neither gets it.
  • AV1 encoding: The RTX 4070 Ti Super adds AV1 encoding through NVENC, useful for streaming and recording.
  • Efficiency: TDP drops from 350 W to 285 W, which means less heat and quieter cooling for similar or better performance.

Cost per Performance Calculation

Using launch MSRPs and the midpoint of the review-based range (the RTX 3080 Ti as 100, the RTX 4070 Ti Super at about 115):

  • RTX 3080 Ti: $1,199 / 100 = about $12.00 per performance point at launch.
  • RTX 4070 Ti Super: $799 / 115 = about $6.95 per point.

On launch pricing the newer card is clearly better value. But that is not the upgrade question. If you already own an RTX 3080 Ti, you are paying for roughly 15% more speed. Paying $799 for that gain is about $53 per extra percentage point, which is poor value. The math only works if the net cost is low: if the RTX 3080 Ti sells for roughly $350-$450 used and a used RTX 4070 Ti Super costs a little more than that, the swap can be close to cost-neutral for the VRAM and features.

Power, PSU and Fitting the Card

Using GPU TDP plus CPU plus about 150 W of headroom:

  • RTX 3080 Ti: 350 W + ~125 W + 150 W = ~625 W, so 750 W is the standard recommendation.
  • RTX 4070 Ti Super: 285 W + ~125 W + 150 W = ~560 W, so a quality 650-750 W unit is fine.

Your current PSU will almost certainly handle the RTX 4070 Ti Super. The connector changes from a 12-pin (Nvidia’s reference style for the RTX 3080 Ti; many partner cards use 8-pin plugs) to the 16-pin connector. Partner cards include an adapter, and modern ATX 3.x PSUs have a native cable. Seat the plug fully and avoid tight bends close to the connector.

Case fit is the main risk. The RTX 4070 Ti Super listed here measures 310 mm and 3 slots, versus 285 mm and 2 slots for the RTX 3080 Ti. There was no Founders Edition for the 4070 Ti Super, and many partner cards are large triple-fan designs, so measure the length available and check whether the extra thickness covers a slot you use.

When the Upgrade Pays Off

Scenario Recommendation
1080p or 1440p, no VRAM problems Keep the RTX 3080 Ti
1440p/4K, hitting 12 GB limits Upgrade is reasonable if net cost is low
Want frame generation for a 240 Hz monitor RTX 4070 Ti Super or RTX 50 series
Want a large performance jump Skip to RTX 5070 Ti, RTX 5080 or higher
Hot or small room, noise-sensitive Upgrade helps through lower power

For a meaningful jump, look at the RTX 5070 Ti, which launched at $749 with 16 GB and lands near RTX 4080 performance in most reviews, or the RTX 5080 at $999. Either gives a much larger gain over an RTX 3080 Ti than the 4070 Ti Super does, plus Multi Frame Generation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much faster is the RTX 4070 Ti Super than the RTX 3080 Ti?

Review data from Tom’s Hardware, Gamers Nexus and TechSpot points to roughly 10-20% at 1440p. The gap is often smaller at 1080p, where the CPU limits both cards. Ray tracing tends to push the gap toward the higher end of the range.

Is the RTX 4070 Ti Super’s narrower memory bus a problem?

Not in practice for gaming. The 48 MB L2 cache reduces how much the card relies on memory bandwidth. At 4K the RTX 3080 Ti’s 384-bit bus narrows the gap, but it does not usually overturn it.

Will my RTX 3080 Ti power supply work with an RTX 4070 Ti Super?

Almost certainly, since the RTX 4070 Ti Super has a lower 285 W TDP. A quality 650-750 W unit is enough with a typical gaming CPU. You will need the included 16-pin adapter or a PSU with a native 16-pin cable.

Is the upgrade worth it just for DLSS Frame Generation?

Usually not at full price. Frame generation helps smoothness on high-refresh monitors but does not improve responsiveness, and FSR 3 frame generation already works on the RTX 3080 Ti in supported games. It becomes worthwhile when combined with the extra VRAM and a low net upgrade cost.

What is a better upgrade from an RTX 3080 Ti in 2026?

The RTX 5070 Ti and RTX 5080 offer much larger performance gains, 16 GB of VRAM and Multi Frame Generation. On the AMD side, the RX 9070 XT is another option with 16 GB and strong raster performance. Any of these is a bigger step than the RTX 4070 Ti Super.
